Today I went on a run down the Cunningham Trail. This trail follows Old Route 24. I have done this before, many times. It is right across from Sunrise Lake. It is a very nice trail, wide enough, well maintained, smooth. It follows the Whippany River and small brooks most of the way. I took the white trail to East Main Street, to Dismal, and then turned around and went down the blue trail that splits from it. This takes you through Brookside and brings you all the way to Ralston. I only ran up to Cold Hill Road before turning around.
The trail follows the Rockaway Valley Railroad (Rockabye Railroad). That is why it is very flat and straight. There are a couple long straight-aways that look like an actual railroad bed. Nearing Cold Hill Road there is a long straight-away that is the old rail bed on a ridge crossing, there are steep cliffs on either side, like the land was built up to keep the rail way level. If you continue to Ralston you follow this rail bed most of the way. It is a very interesting trail. Long ago it was the white trail, but they changed it to blue around 2000 maybe. Beautiful trail.
